the play room

10 months ago we began working on this room.

IMG_2325

stripping the vintage blue rose wallpaper. (it just wasn't workin' for me)
removing the matching drapes.
painting the walls and trim.
replacing the very ugly brass/wicker wobbly ceiling fan with a nice new fixture.

and now....it's done.

IMG_8203

this is the play room and also the guest room.
we (try to) read books together in this bed every night.
it's so cozy all piled in there.
this room has five windows on one wall.
it has a huge tree where you can watch squirrels and birds right in front of you.
and once while up in the night feeding a baby i saw a big fat raccoon.
i knocked on the window and he just looked at me - yuck.
the point is...the view is pretty.
it gets all the afternoon sun.

IMG_8217

behind the map is a pocket door that goes into my bedroom so it's always closed.
i found this red trunk at the flea market years ago.
it smelled awful and the inside was covered with swastikas.
now it holds costumes and dress up clothes. (ahh...much better)
the map is an old school map that my mother-in-law gave me.
it's one of my favorite things.

IMG_8263

i have never made such big pillows...they are super comfy!
and i made the polka dot lampshade too.
it is very basic and imperfect but that's OK.

IMG_8213

that door goes to the back stairway, lauren's room and a bathroom.
these chairs were trash picked.
they have seen better days but i still like them.
the rug came with our house.  it was in the craft room.
it has holes but it's the perfect color in here.
the little blue cabinet was from salvation army.
the READ letters came from hobby lobby...they were gold leafed
before i spray painted them.

IMG_8230

some of our favorite books.
children's books are so colorful and happy.
my dad has had this where the wild things are print since i was kid.

IMG_8233

all the toys and books are inside the closet.
it's a mess in there.
there are toys and a tv in the armoire also.

IMG_8231

i made the duvet and ruffle on the curtains out of two sheet sets from target.
my mom makes duvets too.
you just sew two flat sheets together leaving one end open for button hole closure.
or ribbon instead of buttons....much easier.

feels good to check so much off the list.
now....who is coming to visit?

Okay, I'm not even kidding. This is seriously one of the greatest rooms I've ever seen. And I'm not that into hyperbole. For real. It's beautiful and whimsical and clean and modern and vintage and colorful and simple and perfect. Wow. I'm so inspired it's not even funny. I'm not laughing; I'm drooling. Fabulously done. What kid wouldn't want to read in THERE?!

It is sooo gorgeous and welcoming! love it!

LOVE this room! Just beautiful!

What a happy place!! I love so much color. Totally inspiring.

I am absolutely swooning here! This is the exact style I am going for in my boys room - but with a little less pink - lol. Now I have some definite inspiration! Thank you for sharing this amazing room!

Wow...you are super talented!! The room looks fabulous....

What a beautiful beautiful room.

Thank you so much for showing that you don't have to have lots of money and brand new stuff to design a room well! Whenever I think of really good looking rooms, I get overwhelmed, thinking that that'll never happen until I have the money to go buy all these new things at once. I think it rocks that you made so much yourself and used things with holes/wear in them -- it reminds me that it really can look just as awesome! You did a super amazing job.

Also -- I hope someday I can have a room dedicated to reading. That is the cooled idea ever.

Neat, functional, and colorful.......just what my kids would fall in love!

Oh, how crafty! I adore it. :)

Holy cow girl. You are always surprising me with a fun new room makeover! Well, it doesn't surprise me, since your house is my favorite. Put this one on my favorites on StumbleUpon too. Love love love. Great job, Meg!

xoxo

I'm a little late on this post, but I just found your blog! I LOVE this room. All the color works perfectly together!!! What an inspiring room. So glad I stumbled this way.

I totally love this room. It is just a happy room. Can you come help me decorate...you are so talented!!

I LOVE this room!!! It's so cool that you have a place to all get together to read. Your house reminds me of my childhood home in Illinois. It feels like I'm back there where I see pictures of your rooms. :) Your children are lucky they have such a fun place to grow up. Very kid-friendly!

Now...when are you going to come to Alaska and decorate my house? ;)

I spy isaac mizrahi sheets...we have the same ones on our bed! I love what you've done and agree with the 110 other commenters.

Gorgeous. Tell that little girlie and the guests that I'M JEALOUS!

I love this! It looks awesome.

Absolutely gorgeous and truly functional...what more could you want from any room? Love it!

amazingly cute - of course!! Looks like you have really high ceilings - what year was your house built? Love the big cushy bed for reading and the duvet. 2 sheets sewed together is the best way to change up your bed on a budget - too cute.

Oh, that turned out so lovely. Great work.

Hi Meg, Love the room - it looks so happy and sweet - just like you. I think I love the trash-picked chairs the best - how cute are those! The pillows and duvet are so pretty. What great colors! You are very talented and I always enjoy reading your blog.

wow! what a great room!!!! i love the funky fabrics!!

meg...all i can say is...when we finally move into a house, will you be my interior designer? please? how you decorate is ex-act-ly what i picture for our house someday.
beautiful beautiful beautiful!!

I'm back already.. I"m suppose to be getting important things done and am completely distracted by all of the pictures of your amazing house! It is FABULOUS!!!!!!! I adore old homes. I am about to put that same kind of tile in one of our bathrooms... any pointers???
Also, that fabric store is amazing.. I am looking to recover some chairs and have fabric on the brain (which freaks me out because I can't commit). Sorry to go on and on!!! Have a great weekend!

Oh my! Is that an original Fisher Price Little People House by the map? Is it yours from childhood? I sure wish I still had mine. I know the old little people are choking hazards but that house was my favorite!

Wonderful room!

it is adorable. Love the room. Your house is amazing. I do not know where you find the time for everything, I saw the pile of laundry you do and the pictures of you cleaning and cooking and the taxi service you do. And you have time for being so crafty?

Meg...
are you kidding me?! you are so talented. The room looks perfect! 2 things I need a big ol' house like yours..I may even consider relocating to accomplish this.. and second Can I post one of your pics on my blog and link to you? Cookie mag does those nesting house tours..you need to be on there..

That room turned out so cute. You guys did a great job.

o.k......so, so love this room...and your house. absolutely positively everything about it is what i want my house to be. a-maz-ing! i even got online and was trying to find a historic house to move into just so i can copy cat you. you are da bomb! i borrowed some pictures and put them on my blog....i hope you don't mind. i gave you full credit. my friends are dying....they love it!

We're perfect strangers, but I would love to come and stay in that room, and then you'd have instant regrets because I would. never. leave! All I can say is WOW. Were you a decorator in another life? You know, before the children? If not, what great instinct.

UNBELIEVABLE! I absolutely love it ALL!

Smiles,
Jen
